Veteran meeting with doctor about erectile dysfunction VA disability rating and medical evidence for service-connected claim

Veterans with erectile dysfunction caused or worsened by military service can receive disability compensation through the VA. The condition affects many veterans, particularly those with mental health conditions like PTSD or those taking specific medications.

A service-connected ED rating may qualify you for special monthly compensation (SMC-K). This payment comes in addition to your standard disability compensation.

Required Medical Evidence

Your claim needs three types of documentation to establish service connection.

First, you must provide current medical records showing diagnosis and treatment for erectile dysfunction. These records should include examination findings and any ongoing care you receive.

Second, you need evidence of an in-service event, injury, or condition that caused or worsened your ED. This could be a documented injury, exposure, or diagnosed condition from your service period.

Third, you must establish a medical connection between your military service and your current ED. A nexus letter from your physician can explain how a service-connected condition like PTSD or a prescribed medication directly contributes to your erectile dysfunction.

Research shows that veterans with PTSD experience higher rates of sexual dysfunction. PTSD can trigger or worsen depression, which then contributes to ED. Many veterans successfully treat this condition with medication.

When Expert Medical Opinions Help

Erectile dysfunction often results from mental health conditions like PTSD or from medications used to treat service-connected disabilities. Many veterans don’t realize the VA can rate ED as a disability.

Expert medical witnesses clarify complex medical concepts for VA decision-makers. They translate clinical information into understandable terms and help focus on relevant facts for your claim.

These experts become particularly valuable when your case involves complicated medical connections or when standard documentation doesn’t fully explain your condition.

Proving Secondary Service Connection

Secondary service connection lets you receive benefits for conditions that result from an already service-connected disability. You don’t need to prove an in-service event caused your ED directly.

Instead, you show your erectile dysfunction stems from another service-connected condition. Common examples include diabetes, presumptive cancers, PTSD, or sleep apnea.

Many conditions veterans develop during service contribute to ED. Certain medications prescribed for service-connected conditions can also impair sexual function.

Proving secondary connection typically requires less evidence than establishing primary service connection. You still need documentation linking your original condition to your ED.

A nexus letter works best for this purpose. Your doctor should explain how your service-connected disability causes or aggravates your erectile dysfunction.

Establishing Direct Service Connection

Erectile dysfunction affects men across all age groups. The condition can lead to depression and anxiety, creating additional health challenges.

Multiple factors cause ED, including stress, lifestyle choices, and medications. Veterans whose erectile dysfunction began during or was worsened by military service can receive disability compensation.

The VA evaluates your symptoms, diagnosis, and supporting evidence to determine service connection. You must document that your ED was incurred or aggravated during military service.

Several diagnostic codes apply to erectile dysfunction claims. DC 7520 covers penis deformity, while DC 7521 addresses glans deformity. If you lost a testicle during service and the remaining testicle became atrophied or nonfunctional, the VA rates this at 30%.

Veterans who lost their penis during service or have a significant physical deformity receive a 20% disability rating for erectile dysfunction. This rating accounts for loss of reproductive function and may include special monthly compensation.
