Keeping your home safe is hugely important, especially if you have a family. However, it’s not always clear just how you can keep your home safe. Some people assume that locking the door is enough. The fact is there are more ways to keep you and your home safer than you think.

Always Lock Your Door

It’s estimated that around 40% of intruders enter a home through an unlocked door. By locking all of your external doors you can make your home safer.

You should also purchase insurance as you could be protected if your home is broken into. Please note, if your doors are always unlocked you might not receive a payout. Insurance companies usually only want to pay out if it’s clear you took steps to protect your home

Always Lock Your Windows

Windows are a very common entry point which means they should be locked.

You can help to protect your home by:

  • Shutting and locking all of your windows before you leave the house
  • Installing glass break sensors
  • Using key operated levers to make access even harder

Some window latches aren’t as strong as they seem. Install new latches and new window locks to give you even more protection.

Light up Your Home’s Exterior

Lighting up your home’s exterior is a good way to keep you and your family safe. No one will want to be seen sneaking into your home.

Light up pathways, doorways, your garage, and other important outdoor areas. Use motion sensor lights if you can.

Install a Security System

A really effective way to keep your home safe is by installing a security system.

Some modern smart systems come with cameras. They allow you to monitor your home via your cell phone.

Secure the Garage

If you have a garage you’ll need to make sure it’s secure. Garages can be easy targets because:

  • They offer easy access to your home
  • Cars and expensive tools are often stored in garages
  • Windows in the garage can make it easy to see what’s stored in there
  • Some tools can cut a garage door making breaking in easy

Consider covering the windows to hide what’s inside. Add some extra locks to your garage and consider installing an alarm. The harder you make it to get into your garage, the safer it could be.

Install Security Cameras

Security cameras act as an excellent deterrent to would-be thieves. If someone does break into your home you’ll have proof of the break-in.

Some cameras work as part of a home security system, while others work on their own. Consider installing:

  • Motion detection cameras
  • Cameras with night vision
  • Two-way talk cameras
  • Weatherproof cameras

The more cameras you install, the safer your home could be. Consider installing cameras at every entrance and around the side of your home.

It is possible for you to keep your home safe. Use the above tips to help you feel safe so you have peace of mind.
