Spending Habits

FacebookTwitter

So many people reach a point in their lives where they realize that their spending habits probably are not doing them much justice, and are leading to more financial problems than they may have originally thought.

People end up on Google searching loans Philadelphia, and how to get free money, and the truth is that most of the time it is our own fault through our bad habits that we end up resorting to these google searches.

Sometimes the economy is just in a bad place, and we end up in a bad place too, but our habits don’t help. We don’t manage our finances well enough, or we are frivolous with our spending, and we end up digging ourselves into holes by doing this.

  • Debt

Understand What Habits Are Bad For You

When you want to change how you spend the first thing you need to do is understand where you are going wrong. If your spending habits are bad, but you cannot see this, then you will get nowhere.

Like with any bad habits, the first step to conquering is acknowledging that we have these bad habits in the first place. Here are some bad habits you may want to conquer.

No Budgeting Or Tracking

Budgeting is important, allowing you to easily balance your outgoing money versus your incoming money. If you do not have a budget you will often find  that you are spending more than you earn or getting too close to that incoming versus outgoing threshold.

Budgeting is the process of calculating what you earn and crafting a plan of spending. If you do not track what you spend, you won’t know if your budget works and learn how to adjust it to make it more effective.

You should avoid spending what you haven’t planned to spend.

Paying Too Much

Not having a budget is bad enough, however, we often falter in other areas too, such as spending more than you should.

Overspending and overpaying can be obvious, you might buy something you could’ve got cheaper elsewhere, or perhaps you purchased something on finance that would have been cheaper to buy outright in the long run.

Also, you may be overpaying in other ways, if you drive somewhere you could’ve walked, buying name brand instead of own brand, buying a cheap car that needs a lot of maintenance instead of an expensive new car.

All of these things are paying too much, overpaying, when you could’ve opted for a better option. Sometimes things may not seem cheaper at first glance but in the long run they actually are.

Debt

A lack of budgeting usually leads to this issue. When we take out a loan we need to make sure that we have the money to pay back the loan that we have taken out, if we do not, we can end up working ourselves into a hole of debt.

Even credit cards can be a risky game.

One of the issues many of us have is spending money we do not actually have, this includes taking out loans and credit cards and spending this money when we do not have the funds to pay it off properly, thus leading to debt building up.

Habit Spending

Spending due to habit is also an issue, this means things like dining out a lot, getting takeout, spending too much money going to big social events, as well as drinking, smoking and so on.

Generally, facing these habits does not only help us with our finances but also our mental health and physical health also.

Confront Your Habits

Once you have keyed in on what your bad habits are you will have the opportunity to confront them and tackle them. By this we mean, you can discover ways to break out of these habits.

If you tend to overpay, and you notice this you can now be more aware of it and seek out ways to stop doing so, walk instead of drive, go to bargain stores instead of high-priced shops, buy own brand instead of name brand.

Start Budgeting

Once you know what your bad habits are you also want to start budgeting, learn how to formulate a good budget and keep on top of it. A budget is not just something you build and then leave, even if you have automated payments.

You need to constantly go back and reevaluate it whenever something changes, or when you make a purchase. If you find that you need to make a large purchase, look at your budget, see if you can afford it.

If you get a pay rise, see where in your budget this will be best applied.

Only Spend What You Have To

Most of us fear budgets because they make us think we cannot spend money on the things we want, only the things we need, however, we can spend money on the things we want as well.

You just need to be more careful and monitor your spending when you do so. Leisure time is allowed with a budget.

Regain Control Of Your Life

Regaining control of your spending also allows you to regain control of your life. How you spend your money will have a big impact on how you live. Consider how much you go out, and where you spend your time.

Being more productive in your life and learning to slow down, appreciating what you have and the things you can actually do for free, will not only stop frivolous spending, but it will also help you mentally and physically.

And being more careful financially will also allow you to have more money and be in less of a tight spot.

Get Out Of Debt

If you have a lot of debt, the best thing to do is consolidate your loans, so you are only paying off one debt with one interest rate, rather than many varying ones. Getting out of debt is a big step toward financial freedom, and spending habit control is a part of this.
