Facebook is Joining Crowded Audio Space with Soundbites, Live Rooms and Podcasts

Facebook is the app that takes most of our screen time. However, now it’s going after our listening times also.

On Monday, it got announced by Facebook they are working on various new tools that one can use to create and share audio.

Similar to how it got to making videos following YouTube, having disappearing status following Snapchat, and having short content following TikTok, it’s now going against a new growing medium and competition.

There is an increase in the Audio industry with many people doing podcasts, and now recently, it has gotten more popular with social audio on Clubhouse and Twitter spaces.

On Monday, in an interview with Casey Newtown on Discord, another group-chatting platform, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, said:

“Facebook wants to treat audio as a first-class medium in the way that we treat photos and videos.”

Facebook is working on creating its own live audio product, called Live Audio Rooms, and will soon start testing it on Facebook Groups.

The company’s plan is to make this product available for every user on Facebook by this summer and add it to the messaging app, Messenger.

On Monday, Reddit also announced its own product that’s much like Clubhouse.

Facebook will also be hosting podcasts now. People will be able to listen and discover many platforms through the Facebook app, as many can use alternative platforms like Apple’s podcast app and Spotify.

The new audio product is called Soundbites. Soundbites feature short-form audio-focused with captions, much like TikTok. The feature will first be available to various creators like the comedian Drew Lynch and Molly Burke, the motivational speaker.

Another feature that Facebook announced was its plan for creators to make money using the new audio products. This will happen by it charging people to access the Live Audio Rooms and give users Facebook Stars, the tipping feature.

Another feature that Facebook is launching is an Audio Creator Fund to support the people who use the Soundbites feature.

On Monday, Zuckerberg said:

“He likes audio since theoretically people can more easily consume it while multitasking and also because the production is “more accessible.”

He further said:

“A big part of the creator economy is that it’s empowering individuals. I think that’s a positive trend in the world.”
