Estrogen Dominance Causes Mood Swings and Insomnia

An Introduction to Estrogen Dominance:

Estrogen Dominance is a hormone with a powerful influence on the female body and, as such, it is important to keep its levels balanced–especially during menopause. The term “estrogen dominance” refers to an excess of estrogen relative to progesterone. This imbalance may be caused by either too much estrogen or not enough progesterone. Read on for more info about what estrogen dominance is, what signs you might have it and how to recover from it!

What Is Estrogen Dominance?

Estrogen dominance occurs when there’s too much of the sex hormone estradiol present in relation to other hormones including progesterone. Estrogen dominance is a natural part of the aging process and is not a sign that you have too much or too little estrogen. Even women who are naturally taking birth control pills may have some level of estrogen dominance, as long as they’re not taking estrogen and progesterone together (which we don’t recommend).

Step by Step Guide to Estrogen Dominance

Estrogen dominance occurs when there’s too much of the sex hormone estradiol present in relation to other hormones including progesterone. Estrogen dominance is a natural part of the aging process and is not a sign that you have too much or too little estrogen. Even women who are naturally taking birth control pills may have some level of estrogen dominance, as long as they’re not taking estrogen and progesterone together (which we don’t recommend).

Besides menopause, there are several different factors that can cause estrogen dominance. These include cancer treatment with tamoxifen, excessive consumption of soy products, obesity, and stress. Estrogen is produced in fat cells and being overweight or obese increases the amount of unbound or free estrogens in your body. This can increase the risk for hormone-related cancers like breast and ovarian cancer.

Why Is Estrogen Dominance My Problem?

Estrogen dominance can cause a number of symptoms that can make menopause difficult. This includes bloating, constipation, hot flashes, insomnia, and vaginal dryness. Estrogen dominance may also be linked to endometriosis and fibroids. When estrogen levels are too high, the lining of the uterus grows excessively which may lead to painful periods or other issues associated with menstruation.

Estrogen dominance is also associated with an increased risk for certain types of cancers–particularly breast cancer. Women who have a genetic mutation in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are at increased risk for developing breast cancer as well as ovarian cancer.

How to Avoid Estrogen Dominance

There are several things you can do to prevent estrogen dominance:

– Avoid or decrease soy intake: Soy contains high levels of phytoestrogens which compete with the natural estradiol for binding sites on your body. Phytoestrogens are also known as phytoestrogens. It’s best to avoid any foods that contain these, including soybeans, tofu, and certain types of beans such as adzuki. Soy isoflavones increase your risk of developing breast and prostate cancer (soaking beans overnight before you cook them can help remove this isoflavone).

– Avoid or decrease dairy, especially large portions: Dairy also contains high levels of phytoestrogens and it’s best to avoid excess large quantities of non-organic dairy products. Consuming at least 1 cup of organic whole milk per day is recommended if you choose to drink milk. Organic dairy that comes from a local farm is the best choice as opposed to buying standard USDA milk.

– Avoid or decrease alcohol intake: Alcohol can increase estrogen and progesterone imbalance. Heavy drinkers have an elevated risk for hormone-related cancers like breast cancer, so it may be best for women over the age of 40 to consider eliminating alcohol completely.

Eat foods high in magnesium: Magnesium is needed for the production of a balanced estrogen to progesterone ratio. Foods high in magnesium include leafy greens, dark chocolate, and nuts like almonds and cashews.

– Be active: Regular exercise has been shown to help balance estrogen and progesterone ratios. It also helps improve your overall health and well-being which can help maintain a healthy hormone balance.
