China (where the co-founder of Microsoft achieved fame unlike any other entrepreneur from the west) is in shock with the divorce of Bill and Melinda Gates.
More than 830 million views and 66,000 discussion posts on the hashtag of Bill Gates divorce got received on Weibo, a platform in China, which is similar to Twitter.
It passed the 91 million views that Jeff Bezos (the Amazon, the founder) got on his divorce in 2019.
There was a fuss on Weibo about everything regarding the couple, from how their huge fortune will get divided to if the divorce would affect Microsoft or their charity foundation.
The couple has spent around $53.8 billion through their charitable foundation on global health, poverty, and various other actions.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Bill Gates has a worth of around $146 billion, and the couple has vouched that the majority of their huge wealth will get given to the charity.
After Bill Gate posted on his Weibo account announcing his divorce in Chinese, a Weibo user inscribed:
“You and Melinda have made huge contributions to people around the world. Even if you don’t hold hands together in future life, I hope your foundation can still continue and help more people.”
Even though Bill Gates no longer operates Microsoft, the company has spent years building a good relationship with Beijing.
Microsoft product has a significant presence in China, even though many western tech companies have gotten locked out from China.
Facebook has gotten blocked, while LinkedIn is one of the few social media from the west that is available in the region.
Google has gotten cut out for a few years now, but the search engine Bing is still operational.
Bill Gates’s individual draw has gotten contributed by the huge success of his business.
He has more than 4.1 million followers on Weibo, which is more than Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, and Tim Cook, the chief of Apple.
Many famous tech personalities in China also joined the conversation on Weibo.
The former Google head in China, Kai-fu Lee, who also assisted in setting the Microsoft Lab in Asia stated that he was finding it hard to believe the news.
The foundation of Bill and Melinda Gates set up its office in Beijing in 2007 and since then they have been working with the government on various domestic projects in the country from reducing poverty and interventions of HIV.
