On Twitter, it got announced by Bill and Melinda Gates that they are ending their 27-year marriage through their verified Twitter accounts.
The statement on Twitter read:
“After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage.”
In 2000, the couple found The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, their philanthropic organization.
This organization has spent around $53.8 billion on a huge range of actions regarding global health, poverty, and many other such concerns.
The statement further said:
“We have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives…We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives.”
On Monday, Melinda Gates registered for divorce in King County, Washington, where she asked the judge to terminate her marriage based on their couple separation contract. In the documents made public, no financial details got included.
Many know Bill Gates, as he is one of the richest people in the world.
According to Bloomberg Billionaires, as of February, Bill Gate’s net worth is $137 billion.
The couple met at Microsoft. The company that bill founded and at that time was the CEO.
She joined the company as a product manager and was the only woman in the class of MBA graduates to join the company and work her way up to become the general manager of information products.
She joined the company in 1987, and both met sometime after in New York at a business dinner.
She describes the first meeting in her book, where she recalls:
“The Moment of Lift:” “I showed up late, and all the tables were filled except one, which still had two empty chairs side by side. I sat in one of them. A few minutes later, Bill arrived and sat in the other.”
In 1994, they got married in Hawaii.
In the past year or so, the Gates family using their foundation has been helping and involved in fighting against Covid-19. They are putting in the effort they can to get the treatments and vaccines developed and get them distributed globally.
On Monday, in their statement, they asked for privacy and said:
“We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.”
There has been no further comment from the couple.
